Jerry Maurer’s The Curse of the Tribe: Book One: the Curse Seeks a Family is well-researched historical fiction set in a sixteenth/twenty-first century comparison contrast framework with the help of a science fiction “portal”. It is an intriguing read for America’s middle school students.
I fell in love with the tribe in this book, and found myself educated and amazed about the difficulty of just surviving in the time and place of this story. I would give it five stars except there's a few animals in the story that I wish would have met a different end. It is such a fresh idea; retro historical science fiction meets ordinary suburban guy, turning him into an accidental hero with a tattered Indian tribe on the edge of extinction in America's great southwest 500 years ago.
“'An Incredible Journey' is full of adventure. At times you find yourself holding your breath, just hoping everything turns out well, but will it? You really need to read this book. Jerry is a blossoming author and has a way of drawing you into the pages of his books like you are there living each adventure with these indigenous people. Rebecca Mowery |
Couldn't put the book down until I finished it. The characters and the plot are very engaging. Found it interesting that we do not know the name of the protagonist on this side of the portal only the name Chee which is given to him by the tribe; that adds to the intrigue of the story. The care and concern of Chee for the decimated tribe in helping them with survival skills was very heartwarming even more so his attention to the little “Curse of the Tribe”. The hunting episodes were not off putting at all but a necessary part of teaching hunting skills and adventure in the story. Having been a fan of Grey, La'Mour and Hobbs this book is now one of my favorites and am looking forward to book two.
"With sincerity and heart, Maurer weaves a memorable story of growing friendships, healing old wounds, and building a better life. You'll feel like part of the tribe as these loveable characters navigate an old world filled with adventure and quiet wonder. Join the journey and experience the magic for yourself. You won't want to miss it."
“It was a thrilling novel and a real page-turner! Readers of all ages will enjoy it. Highly recommend giving it a read through.”
